Our story starts back in 1995. Yes, a pager. It was the absolute pinnacle of high-tech communication, right up until my service got abruptly disconnected because my provider failed to pay their bill.
Now, back in 1995, "porting" your phone number—meaning keeping your number when switching companies—simply wasn’t a thing. If you lost your number, it was gone forever. Unwilling to part with my precious numerical lifeline, I went on a full-scale detective mission, finally tracking down the mysterious shadow company that had absorbed my number and signing up for service.
Along the way, I discovered I wasn’t the only civilian left stranded in the 90s digital cold. A lightbulb went off, and an empire—or at least a very determined business—was born.
I enlisted my parents' company, The Tucker Group, and we opened Tucker Communication as a division of it. By 1996, we had so many customers we could not keep handling it from home, so we opened a brick-and-mortar storefront on John R. Road in Hazel Park, Michigan, where we offered pager service at the unheard-of price of $6.95 per month—easily the lowest around. Cellular phones were just starting to become portable, so we started carrying them as well. On July 1, 1998, we officially split off into Tucker Communication, Inc.
In 1997, we launched TuckerNet, diving headfirst into dial-up internet (yes, that glorious, screeching symphony of dial tone negotiation was how everything ran back then). Naturally, as the internet was expanding, we started providing web hosting, and design services alongside it. By 2001, we sold the Hazel Park storefront and our existing pager accounts to another retailer to focus entirely on the web hosting and backup. That evolution birthed OaklandBackup.com, an online computer backup business back when digital backups were still in their infancy and people still trusted floppy disks.
As our internet footprint expanded, we rebranded the web side to TuckerX.com. Over the years, our digital family tree has grown to include TuckerX.com, Oaklandbackup.com, 94West.net, MomsIT.com, and Tuckercomm.com A single dropped beeper number in 1995 turned into a lifetime of keeping Metro Detroit online.
